A Letter from Mr. Vandell

Dear HFMS Families,

Welcome to HFMS for the 2025-2026 school year!!

As we enter this new school year, I want to assure you that our priority is to build a working relationship with our families and school community to provide the best experience possible.  There is a singleness of purpose at HFMS: to provide the highest quality education for our students in a safe and caring environment.  That’s it really, and we have an experienced and caring staff that will consistently put your child’s education and needs as their first priority.

With that in mind, I would personally like to take this opportunity to invite you to our annual Back to School Barbeque/Meet the Teacher Night on Tuesday, August 26, from 5:00 – 8:00 pm.  This will be a great time to strengthen our HFMS community, meet teachers and other families, learn about the upcoming school year, possibly win a basket raffle (one of the prizes is a new TV), and enjoy some good food and fellowship.  The Barbeque is from 5:00 – 6:00 in our cafeteria if you can join us then, followed by the Meet the Teacher event from 6:00 – 8:00 pm.  For our Meet the Teacher event, please report to the following location at 6:00 depending on the grade level of your student:

·       6th grade families – auditorium

·       7th and 8th grade families – Gym

After a brief introduction from our admin team, you will be dismissed to follow an abbreviated version of your student’s schedule and meet with each of those teachers.  We look forward to seeing you on the 26th!

I would also like to take this opportunity to mention a few changes that are worth noting:

  • We are starting 5 minutes earlier this year.  That means doors open at 7:30 each day and Homeroom starts promptly at 7:47am.  Students who do not ride the bus should plan on arriving no later than 7:43am in order to have enough time to get to Homeroom on time.

  • The cell phone policy has changed for all West Virginia public education students.  Cell phones are no longer permitted during the instructional day per WV law.  Students who bring a cell phone to school must keep it in their locker during the school day.  Parents will be contacted to come pick up the phone of any student who violates the policy.

That’s about it for now, please do not ever hesitate to reach out to myself or our admin team if there are questions or concerns you have at anytime throughout the school year.  Public education is at its finest when the school and family work together towards that single purpose.

Have a great year!

Attendance Update

According to Zoom WV-E data, the middle school average chronic absenteeism dropped 4.22% from 2023-2024 to 2024-2025. Chronic absenteeism is defined as missing 10% or more of instructional days, excused or unexcused. Why does attendance matter? Students with good attendance have higher academic achievement, better social and personal skills, and are prepared for their future. Parent notes are limited to 10 per school year. Use our homepage to report your child’s absence electronically. Our district-wide campaign for this school year is “Strive for Less Than 5!” absences each semester. Please use the attendance tracker sent home with your student’s first day paperwork to track your child’s absences this school year. Feel free to reach out with any questions

Note from the Nurse

Reminder, all medications—including over-the-counter medications, inhalers, and prescriptions—require a signed medication order from a physician to be administered at school. Please also remember to submit any updated medical forms and immunization records as they become available throughout the school year. Keeping these records current ensures we can provide the best care for your child. Thank you for your cooperation!
