Greetings HFMS Families,
I had already submitted my contribution to the newsletter for May, but in light of recent events I decided to go back to the drawing board. It’s been a tough week. There’s no real sugarcoating it but the fact remains that your children’s safety will always be the top priority of the staff of Harpers Ferry Middle School. Nothing will ever change that. And even though the recent threats made towards our fellow middle schools were deemed noncredible, I understand that does not erase all of our concerns or frustrations.
The investigation into these recent threats is ongoing but in the meantime, we will continue to follow our comprehensive safety plan to ensure a safe environment. I am also aware that some of those safety protocols can come with their own set of frustrations. During this past week HFMS was placed on a “Secure” response protocol on both Wednesday (WMS threat) and Thursday (CTMS threat). In fact, on Wednesday we were originally directed to “lockdown” when the initial threat to Wildwood was made, and shortly thereafter moved to “secure”. There was never a threat made towards HFMS during the past week but even so, we followed these safety directives out of an abundance of caution. During any lockdown or secure status we will be unable to release any students for any reason, but I assure you we will work with you to make arrangements for that to happen as soon as the status is clear. We will also always allow your child to speak with an administrator, counselor, or other trusted adult if they are feeling uneasy or have concerns. Students will also always have the ability to call home or a call will be made on their behalf if we have a high volume of requests.
Looking ahead I am requesting an increased police presence for our school for the weeks that lie ahead. Our staff continues to stay vigilant and alert for any threats as well as having an increased focus on best practices for all things safety. I have two kids, one is 8 and the oldest is 28. (Don’t ask.) When I roll into work every day I have 530 kids and I care for them just like my own, Audrey and Austin. My promise to you is that our staff will do everything we can to ensure your child’s safety every day regardless of the circumstances. If you still have questions or concerns feel free to contact me using the information provided below.
Take care,
Eric R. Vandell
