Update from Dr. Bishop

Thank you, Attendance, and Safety

Thank You

As we close another school year, thank you all for supporting our students and staff. Every year serves as a reminder that our students need our community’s support to grow and succeed. In return, our students grow into community members who open businesses, work locally, volunteer, and raise the next generation of children.

Over the next two weeks, many end-of-year events will be happening in our schools. I encourage you to attend and support as many of these activities as possible. Our students and staff love to show off and celebrate all they accomplished together throughout the year.

Attendance

JCS staff and families have worked tirelessly this year to encourage our students to attend school every day, and it is working!

JCS's chronic absenteeism rate is 18.78% as of Friday, May 17. If JCS finishes the year below the 20% threshold that the WV Department of Education set, we would come off "on watch" status for attendance. Students are chronically absent when they miss 10% or more of available school days, excused or unexcused.

Please encourage your student to finish the year strong and attend every day over the next 2 weeks to participate in activities, events, and learning as the school year winds down. There is still so much they can learn in 2 weeks.

Safety

There is a dangerous TikTok trend circulating, encouraging students to put metal objects, such as thumbtacks, paper clips, or pencil lead, into the USB ports of Chromebooks. This can cause the devices to smoke and potentially ignite the battery. In addition to the safety concerns, students who knowingly destroy school property will face disciplinary measures.

We ask you to speak with your students about the dangers and consequences of participating in this online trend. If you have not already, please make sure your student returns their device and charger to their school.

Have an enjoyable end to the school year!

Dr. Chuck Bishop
