From Principal Payne

Spring has sprung all around us! We can see it, feel it and yes - smell it! I cannot believe we are less than 2 weeks away to spring break - and boy does every staff member and student deserve this chance to reset, rejuvenises and rest!

When we return, there are field trips, assemblies, concerts for our eager students, and SEA events for our families to enjoy in the fun! Along with the fun, we will have kindergarten registration for our future roadrunner/black bears on April 28th. If you know of families moving to our area or preparing to send their little one to school - please remind them of our date that they must make an appointment for.

I am so excited to see our community outside on April 9th during our annual Story Book Parade! Please cheer on our young readers and all of our educators as they proudly walk through our downtown streets!

Our 3rd-5th graders will be gearing up for WVGSA spring testing. Our schedule is as follows:

3rd Grade: May 1 - Reading; May 8 - Writing; May 15 - Math

4th Grade: April 30 - Reading; May 8 - Writing; May 14 - Math

5th Grade: April 29 - Reading; May 7 - Writing; May 13 - Science; May 15 - Math

It is so important, especially for 3rd graders who will be assessing for the first time, that a great night's rest is provided before testing days. Also, eating a breakfast at home or school will benefit their endurance and concentration. We hope our students prepare to show all that they have learned and use the skills and strategies for each question they encounter. This is only 1 measurement of many that show what our students can accomplish on a given day, but the data is very important when used to create interventions at school, compared to all other JC elementary schools and a measurement for the state of WV in these grade levels. Although we take the testing seriously and teach all students to show their best, we are compassionate professionals who understand there's a lot more to your child's development and progress than this test, and will do our best to be proactive with practices that calm our students and diminish anxiety. Thank you for supporting your child during these important days ahead for them.

As we are still fighting many illnesses and germs, we can't stress enough the importance of supporting conversations at home about washing hands often and bringing their own water bottle to school. These small habits, besides good rest and healthy eating, will ensure our students are safely in school learning and growing.

Mrs. Payne😊

TRANSPORTATION:

Parents can visit the Jefferson County Schools website to learn more about student bus information: https://www.jcswv.org/page/find-my-school-and-bus-stop-information Parents can also view live updates on bus status each day by using the following link: https://www.jcswv.org/page/bus-tracker

SCHOOL HOURS:

Students who are riders/walkers and require breakfast can enter the school at 8:30. All other students and bused students will enter the school at 8:35 and can either eat breakfast or go to their classroom.

The tardy bell rings at 8:50 a.m.

Please do not pick up your child from school between 3:00-3:25, unless it is an emergency. You will have to pick up your children at the Kindergarten dismissal doors after 3:25 p.m. if picking up your child. You cannot park your car in the front bus loop during our dismissal time, either. Dismissal begins at 3:25 for walkers and riders. Bused students' dismissal begins at 3:30. Thank you for understanding the safety and commotion that occurs if we disregard this important policy.

When you drop off your child or items for your child, you will remain outside without having to show your ID and we will come to the door to take your child/items. If you need to pick up your child early or come into the building during school hours because you are volunteering/attending a meeting, you will continue to show your ID at the door before entering. Thank you for your help in being prepared for these instances!

SUBMIT AN ABSENCE ON LINE:

https://app.droplet.io/form/0YPd5K

Every time your child is absent from school, it is very important to submit an excuse within 3 days of their return or it is counted as unexcused. Our preferred and easiest way of submitting an excuse is by using this link found on either our school or the county's front page of both websites. You can even submit doctor's notes by uploading them in the link. Please build this preferred way as your habit of sending in excuses.

Remember, you get 10 days of excused absences by sending in a parent note, but after those 10 are used, they become all unexcused.

SES SCIENCE FAIR

The 2025 Shepherdstown Elementary School Science Fair was a great success! 49 students in grades 3-5 completed and presented 34 projects to our volunteer judges. The students were interviewed and given a chance to showcase the knowledge of their projects which they selected from one of these areas: Earth Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Environmental Science. An evening Open House was held for parents and friends, and all of SES had the opportunity to visit the fair during school. Special thanks to Cheryl S. Lawrence for coordinating it all and working with the children along the way, Fred Dubay for organizing the judges, SEA volunteers who retrieved students, and to all the parents/guardians/staff members for encouraging children to successfully participate! We look forward to another science fair next year!

ATTENDANCE MATTERS ALL DAY EVERY DAY!

As we are striving to achieve our Attendance Goals at SES, we understand our limitations with the flu interrupting many lives in our school family! In March we encouraged how SILLY it is to miss school and enjoyed students sharing goofy jokes on the morning announcements, classroom competitions to hold on to the school trophy for a week and highest attending grade levels being rewarded with silly band bracelets each week.

5TH GRADE LOVES PIE ON MARCH 14 (3.14)

Students used their knowledge of measurement and division to calculate pi. Pi is a mathematical constant and is the ratio of the circumference to the diameter of a circle. Pi=C/D.  It is often expressed as 3.14, but it is actually a number that does not end. After measuring their pie shells and calculating pi, students made and ate pies.

Rotary Grant Received!

The Shepherdstown Rotary Club has awarded two "Rotary Reads" grants submitted by our interventionist Tana Southern and a 2nd grade teacher Gindy Goff totaling $435 to Shepherdstown Elementary School. One grant, for $335, is being used to buy multi-sensory materials for small-group instruction, and the other grant covered the $100 cost of bus transportation for a second-grade field trip to the town library.

The Rotary Club presented the awards at the April 1 weekly breakfast meeting at the Bavarian Inn.

Present to receive it was second-grade teacher Gindy Goff. The accompanying photo shows her, center, with Club President Cara Keys, left, and Lesley Lopez, a member of the Club's Vocational Service Committee, right.

The Shepherdstown Rotary Club's Rotary Reads grant program is one of several Rotary Club activities aimed at enhancing literacy among local children. It consists of cash grants, awarded annually, to worthy institutions for projects or programs that promote reading. Enhancing literacy has been a major priority of Rotarians since their organization's founding in 1905, and we are very thankful for their support!

SEEING CLEARLY WITH NURSE SANDY!

A child needs many abilities to succeed in school and good vision is one of those. Reading, writing, and using computers are visual tasks students perform daily. Their eyes are constantly in use during the school day. If their vision is not functioning properly, poor development, or delayed learning can occur. Vision changes can occur without you or your child noticing. The earlier a vision problem is detected and treated, the more likely the treatment will be successful.

Signs to look for if your child is having vision problems include:

  • frequent eye rubbing/blinking

  • blurry vision

  • avoiding reading

  • frequent headaches

  • covering one eye

  • frequent squinting

  • seeing double

  • holding reading material close to the face

  • difficulty remembering what they read

A vision screening is NOT a comprehensive exam. Even if a child passes a vision screening, they should receive an eye exam performed by the optometrist and should be performed yearly once they reach school age. According to the American Optometric Association:

  • up to 75% of school vision screenings miss vision problems

  • 61% of children found to have eye problems through screenings never visit the doctor

FACT - more than 1 in 20 preschool-age children and 1 in 4 school-age children have a vision disorder.

Counselor Tips For SES Families

Are you feeling that you could use some extra support parenting or finding resources in our community?  Please remember to check out Jefferson County School's Social & Emotional Support Department page, https://www.jcswv.org/page/somo-resources. The SoMo Resources page offers information for our community, the classroom, and at home.

Another great resource is ParentGuidance.org. Families statewide now have access to state-funded mental health and wellness coaching, thanks to a partnership with the WV Department of Education and the Cook Center for Human Connection.  Learn what you are doing right, learn how to improve your relationships, and get the parental support you need from a coach.  Parent coaching includes:  weekly calls, messaging with your coach, guided (step-by-step resources), tools & tips to help you parent, and confidential help.  It's a great no-cost virtual service with no long waitlist for therapists and works well for busy schedules.

Please reach out to Mrs. Colbert with any questions about these services or other student needs that you may have.
