NOVEMBER 2024-25

From Principal Payne

j

November approaches makes me more aware of all I am thankful for and appreciative of when it comes to Shepherdstown Elementary School and all the stakeholders that make this school a priority. Working with professional staff members who love their career and colleagues makes coming to work very rewarding for me. I am in awe of the students and families who support the classroom efforts and indulge in the celebration of progress being made academically, socially, and emotionally. This community is strong in its commitments, dreams, and everyday boots-on-the-ground hard work that it takes to support the transformation of our children into prepared, caring, involved, and happy people to become our future leaders. November is the month of kindness with November 13th being recognized as World Kindness Day. We want all of our SES family to be involved with sharing kindness and participating in activities in which others know they are appreciated and thought of! It's an honor to be a part of the traditions, vision, and day-to-day work of an outstanding school.

S.E.A. had the pleasure of Assistant Superintendent Ron Stephens speaking at the October meeting to make sure our community has the knowledge behind the Excess Levy when voting in this year's election. Our county has made the JCS website full of important information to help understand the facts and details about the full Levy and what the money helps fund in our schools. If you haven't read it, please do! jcswv.org Our next S.E.A. meeting is on November 20th at 6:00 p.m. Check out the other November events in the S.E.A. yearly flyer in this newsletter.

Attendance matters in all areas of SES. You may notice if your children are absent from school, we are reaching out to talk with you or sending your child a postcard in the mail, because we want to help support all of our families in raising our daily attendance and not becoming a chronic attendance issue (18 or more absences in a year). In October, we rewarded children who came to school on time for a full day of school with a leaf. This leaf (learning everything attending faithfully) with your child's name on it, are filling our walls to remind us of its importance. Every child who did not miss a day in October will be rewarded with attending a session of minute-to-win-it games in the gym on November 1st!

In November, our attendance incentive includes the IMPORTANCE OF ATTENDING SCHOOL IN BETWEEN THE MANY DAYS OFF WE ALREADY HAVE IN NOVEMBER. If a child is present on Nov. 4, 12, and 22nd, we will allow children to put their turkey ticket in a K-2 Jar/3-5 Jar. On November 22nd we will pull 1 winner from each and the child will win gift cards to take home and gobble up together for Thanksgiving break and enjoy with their family!

Our Lost and Found is growing! Please be sure to check what you send your child to school in is coming home and follow up with your child to look in Lost and Found if an item is missing. At the end of the semester, we donate all items left behind.

We have many families who pick up their children after school and we want to send out a reminder that you must hold your family sign. This is important to the staff who work this important process at the end of the day in making sure we are safely locating and putting our students in the right hands at the end of a hectic and busy time. Many times we have substitutes and new staff members to this responsibility and by parents doing their part in holding their sign helps make the process as quick and successful as possible for all of us! Thank you.

I hope this month is full of moments to be very thankful for and that you include your child's teachers on that list! May your Thanksgiving table be full of the people you most appreciate and enjoy and know that your family here is hoping for a safely traveled, happy, and restful fall break for your family!

TRANSPORTATION:

Parents can visit the Jefferson County Schools website to learn more about student bus information: https://www.jcswv.org/page/find-my-school-and-bus-stop-information Parents can also view live updates on bus status each day by using the following link: https://www.jcswv.org/page/bus-tracker

SCHOOL HOURS:

Students who are riders/walkers and require breakfast can enter the school at 8:30. All other students and bused students will enter the school at 8:35 and can either eat breakfast or go to their classroom.

The tardy bell rings at 8:50 a.m.

Please do not pick up your child from school between 3:00-3:25, unless it is an emergency. You will have to pick up your children at the Kindergarten dismissal doors after 3:25 p.m. if picking up your child. You cannot park your car in the front bus loop during our dismissal time, either. Dismissal begins at 3:25 for walkers and riders. Bused students' dismissal begins at 3:30. Thank you for understanding the safety and commotion that occurs if we disregard this important policy.

When you drop off your child or items for your child, you will remain outside without having to show your ID and we will come to the door to take your child/items. If you need to pick up your child early or come into the building during school hours because you are volunteering/attending a meeting, you will continue to show your ID at the door before entering. Thank you for your help in being prepared for these instances!

SUBMIT AN ABSENCE ON LINE:

https://app.droplet.io/form/0YPd5K

Every time your child is absent from school, it is very important to submit an excuse within 3 days of their return or it is counted as unexcused. Our preferred and easiest way of submitting an excuse is by using this link found on either our school or the county's front page of both websites. You can even submit doctor's notes by uploading them in the link. Please build this preferred way as your habit of sending in excuses.

Remember, you get 10 days of excused absences by sending in a parent note, but after those 10 are used, they become all unexcused.

SES STUDENT & FAMILY HANDBOOK:

Please take time and read our Family and Student Handbook for 2024-25.

HIGHLIGHTING AT SES....

FIRST GRADER'S LOVE LEARNING!

First grade students have been having a blast this month, going from doctors to farmers.  Students have learned all about the human body systems and healthy eating, practiced surgery in the operating room, and even built their own skeletons. Students showed their knowledge in a variety of activities, even creating life-sized body systems. To finish out the month, first grade went on their annual field trip to the pumpkin patch, where they navigated through a corn maze, learned about the growing process of the pumpkin plant, and mastered the art of pumping water while playing on the farm playground. Picking their pumpkins and petting the farm animals was the highlight of their trip. We are having so much fun in first grade!

Meet Mrs. Boyd, S.E.S. LIBRARIAN

b

Meet Mrs. Leslie Boyd, our school librarian. Her first experience at SES was as a student teacher and is now in her sixteenth year of teaching! She taught fifth grade for many years before moving into the library. She really enjoys reading and discussing picture books with our younger students and teaching critical thinking and research skills to our older students. She is excited for our spring book fair which will take place in early April. Keep an eye out for more details!

Until then....happy reading!

WHAT'S COOKING IN THE CAFETERIA?!

S.E.S. is so fortunate to have the very best and hardest working cafeteria staff in the county! Mrs. Shannon Corbin is our cafeteria manager and has worked in our county for 14 years. She enjoys seeing children's smiles each day! Stephanie Smith has worked for 9 years in the county and she enjoys preparing meals. Sherry Chambers has worked for SES for 36 years and considers this to be her home away from home!

A Word of Care From Our Nurse Sandy

It is the beginning season of COVID, FLU, RSV, and the common cold (Rhinovirus)!

As of March 2024, students/staff who are sick with a respiratory illness should follow these guidelines: Stay home and away from others; students are not allowed to participate in extracurricular activities while they are home sick.

Students and staff may return to school: if they are fever free for 24 hours WITHOUT the use of fever-reducing medication; symptoms that are improving overall for 24 hours

It is recommended that a mask be worn for 5 days upon return to school.

The most effective strategies to reduce your risk of infection include getting vaccinated for those eligible to receive it, cleaning and disinfecting high traffic/touched areas, hand hygiene, and coughing/sneezing etiquette.

Talk to your doctor early if you are worried about your child’s illness. Even healthy children can get very sick from respiratory illnesses.

If your child is experiencing these symptoms, you should go to the emergency room:

Fast or trouble breathing

  • Bluish lips or face

  • Ribs pulling in with each breath

  • Chest pain

  • Severe muscle pain (child refuses to walk)

  • Dehydration- No urine output for 8 hours

  • Not alert or interacting when awake

  • Seizures

  • Fever above 104

ATTENDANCE MATTERS ALL DAY EVERY DAY!

As we are striving to achieve our Attendance Goals at SES, we are celebrating our successes! We had an overall positive monthly attendance rate of 94.5%! Our goal is to have up to a 2% increase in October! We are slipping in our chronic absences, which is just over 15% of our student population. This month we are starting a mentoring of students who are chronically absent to reach out every day and connect with the student and family even more.

During the month of October, students were able to earn a LEAF to post on the wall to make a chain displaying our Learn Everything Attend Faithfully around our school! If a student is not tardy from Oct. 1 - 31st and present at school for what counts as a full day, they earned a Minute to Win It Game Event to attend on Friday, November 1st! About 1/3 of our student population may attend the event based on perfect October attendance

In

As you can see from our Attendance bulletin board, 1st & 3rd grade are really carrying our school's positive attendance percentage! Yellow stars represent weeks of over 95%. We slipped 1/2 percent between September and October, but we are hopeful that November bounces back upwards!

headL

November is a tough teaching month for our staff because of all the days off students have disrupting our consistency and sequence of lessons. Because of having 7 days off this month, please provide extra encouragement to our children to be here every single day we are in school this short month!
